This easy Arabic-style tomato chutney, inspired by Salata Hara, uses only tomatoes, green chili, garlic, cumin, salt and lemon juice. There is no cilantro or parsley required, making it an inexpensive side when you want something fresh, spicy and bright without buying extra herbs.

Arabic-Style Tomato Chutney (Salata Hara)

Ingredients

  • 2 ripe tomatoes
  • 1–2 green chilies, or to taste
  • 1 small garlic clove
  • ½ tsp cumin powder
  • Salt, to taste
  • 1–2 tsp fresh lemon juice, or to taste

Instructions

  1. Wash the tomatoes and cut them into chunks.
  2. Add the tomatoes, green chilies, garlic, cumin powder, salt and lemon juice to a blender.
  3. Blend briefly until everything is combined but the chutney is still slightly textured, rather than completely smooth.
  4. Taste and adjust the salt, lemon juice or chili to your preference.
  5. Serve right away, or chill before serving if you prefer it cold.

Budget-Friendly Tip

No cilantro or parsley is needed for this version. The tomatoes, green chili, garlic, cumin and lemon provide plenty of fresh flavor on their own.

For more heat, use the second green chili. For a milder chutney, start with one.

Serving Ideas

Serve this spicy tomato chutney as a fresh side with rice, flatbreads or grilled dishes.
